Tap water is loaded with chlorine to kill some bacteria and also makes the water look clear. However, most tap water is full of bacteria and other things you really shouldn't be digesting. Chlorine is bad for your body in many ways ie., hardening arteries, liver etc. You can always call a water conditioning company to do a water test however, they want to sell you stuff. I find it alot easier to purchase purified water at the store then re-use and re-fill the jugs at a store that has a Reverse Osmosis water stand. It may seem like an extra thing to do or extra bother but your health is worth it. I do not drink water out the tap anywhere.

Chlorination is a really common water treatment. Supposedly its safe but I prefer to filter my drinking water. Try a Brita pitcher or they even have a fliter you can add right to the kitchen faucet. If you let the water run a bit the smell will get better, but not sure about the taste

Bleach is a common water treatment. Even folks who homestead are told to add a little bleach to the rainwater they collect for drinking.

I taste it here in Chicago. Let your water run for a minute, it helps.

Its more than likely the chemicals they use to purify the water. Call the municipal office and ask them to send someone to test it....they do it for free here in Pennsylvania.
