Considering it is a good song, with racist undertones, you might reconsider.
Or you could just accept the criticism in the name of art.

Ok, well I never realised it had any racist undertones! I'm a Brit, so there are a couple of bits where I don't know what they are talking about (the governor, who was he? Montgomery? Muscle Shoals?), but even so. All it has ever meant to me is being a song about loving Alabama and going home to see family. Nothing wrong with that in my book!

I think it's a wicked song, it's one of my all time favourites and as far as I'm concerned it's one that'll always get people up and dancing or singing along!

If you like it then sing it, who is anybody else to tell you not to if the music gets you going!

Ok, now as I decided to comment on it I thought I would read up on it. It seems that whether or not it's racist is generally down to personal opinion, so I feel that backs me up. If you like it and don't feel it is an insult to yourself or others then sing the song!

Crikey, you could even ask at future gigs if anyone will be offended if you sing it! If they are then don't, if everyone just laughs or looks blank then let them enjoy your voice belting out a classic :)

ps, I'm with Sharrona, if you sing it good then who cares? And Danswoodcrafts, don't let others opinions sway what you do, just research and have an answer for people.

i don't think you should let racist ideals sway your musical preferences,if your band does the song well, the n continue to perform it. research the meaning behind the music and i think you will be able to give your friends and band mates the answers they need to cope with this situation
