Depends on your definition of car.

First self-propelled land machine was the 1776 Cugnot Steamwagon, which built in France and used by Napoleon's Continental Army to haul cannons. It used steam power, had three wheels (one front, two rear and was Rear-Wheel Drive), and one man drove it while standing up and shifting levers for speed, brakes, and steering. Top speed was 2-3 miles per hour, and every half hour it had to pause and build up steam. Total of two were made, of which one is in a French museum now and the other is either destroyed or lost forever.

First modern-style car (internal combusion engine, seating, means of steering, speed faster than a man can walk) was the 1885 Benz Patent Motorwagen built in Germany by what later became Mercedes-Benz. This was nearly 110 years after the Cugnot.

First mass-produced car was the 1901 Oldsmobile Curved-Dash, built in the United States utilizing a stationary assembly line. Later on came the motionary assembly line to build the much more well-known Ford Model T, starting in 1908 and also in the United States.

That's about the best I can do. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.
