I suppose one could look this up. I just assume that people made "sounds" that represented their feelings, (thoughts), & these were recognized, & over time evolved into "crude" language & then~I don't think it's a silly question. For example, the more I talk to, & with my cat, the more she sounds like she's actually speaking my language, & has gone from one word to a phrase to a sentence. I think it must have been "natual" to make sounds expressing emotions, like fear & anger & awe, & so on.It's a fascinating question, & now I'm curious about any theories on how language first developed.

By trial and error...picture writing came first and then the trial and error. Say, one cave man pointed to a pic on a cave wall and while looking at it made a sound of a lion and someone in the cave mistakenly took the roar and said 'lllliiiiiiiiiiiiioooon' cause it sounded like the roar...... just an example / idea. After awhile they associated the first mans' sounding roar and the roar got shorter and shorter and soon became lion.

Maybe onomatopoeia had something to do with it. a swish sounded like a swish, a bang sounded like a bang, etc. And maybe sombody hurt himself and said, "owch!" and started using that word every time he or anybody else got hurt. I must be a genius.

We don't necessarily think in words. We think in concepts.
