As far as you want to go...
I recently retired after 33 years of metal manufacturing, and I can testify that in spite of a few moments that one doesn't always get the recognition desired, hard work and attention to detail will put you ahead of the rest of the pack.
I've always been well rewarded for my efforts, but that's also a two-edged sword. I've also been given the harder jobs - as opposed to the gravy jobs - but that's exactly where skill and attention to detail lets you shine...

I guess one of the criteria in life is working as hard and smart as possible. There is no two-ways concerning the living aspect on earth. Life is painfully a competitive arena, engrossed in blood, sweat, and tears, the imaginary of hard work that required rising up the success ladder. In acknowledgement, we are never alone in this particular quest in rising to the top. We are not alone either, fighting the every grain of subsistence that never in the wildest dream be around for easy picking which require only dedication, and concerted effort from both our mind and body and whatever innate endowments in possession for the achievement. Am I over exaggerating?
Life is an entanglement of joy and sorrow, entirely the results of “ability” and “opportunity” that never seem to favor everyone but only the minority. That indifference in social standing and wealth disparity is further an inducement to work harder. The uncertainty ahead is more so an excuse to hold-on and thrive harder, when nothing is constant that remain so in the future.

Working hard in persective gets me nowhere. If you are always working you have no time to observe your surrondings. Though if you are sure of your cause you can live on the top of the world or trapped below it.

On its own?
Nowhere.
If you want to get somewhere, you have to work hard at the right thing. And more than anything, you have to be lucky.
The smartest way to go is to actually expend as little effort as possible, thus having more effort to expend on more things. Work for its own sake is worth nothing.

It gets you recognition from the lazy people on the top who do nothing all day but benifit from the hard work you do all day. Maybe one day you'll make it to the top and not have to work so hard...
