I have the Braun Thermoscan. It was around $50, but it works great. I use this one at work and the temps are always right on. You just have to make sure you get it in far enough and at the right angle. Don't be afraid to practice.
Also, if you have one sick kid and you want to temp her/him frequently, you can just wipe off the ear cover and keep using it on the same peron. Change it at the end of the day or before you temp someone else.

Walmart has several Safety 1st brand ear thermometers for good prices--I saw one on their website for less than $20, and I'm pretty sure the one I bought in the store was around $15.
