My boss's mom just passed away, he is 1000 miles (or more) away and I will not be able to be with him at this time. I dont know if I should wait to see him to tell him Im sorry....
What should I do?

I understand your problem because people are so sensitive at stressful times like this (especially anything involving their mother) and any event seems magnified 100 times. If an email is all you can do, I would have no objection to it. However, more is needed when he returns home. At the very least, a nice tasteful (Hallmark brand perhaps) sympathy card is in order, and will be deeply appreciated. Also, different regions seem to have different customs for comforting the bereaved. In my home territory, the American South, for example, it is customary to take home-cooked food to the bereaved family. You may have different customs in your area.

An old fashioned real greeting card is the most appropriate thing. It will seem much more sincere, and more personal than a work email.

It's nice of you to want to express your condolences. Good call.

Yes it's okay to say that via email if he's away, but also express your sympathy personally upon his return.

Call him on the phone and offer your condolence and ask if there is anything that you could do for him. Before hanging up, tell him if he thinks of anything he should just e-mail you.

send a card....and not an E card. Go to hallmark and get a real sympathy card and mail it to him.

I still have ALL the cards from both my parents funerals, and they meant alot to our family.
