In my (limited) experience, the best are Monopoly, Risk and chess. Have you tried Go - the ages old game played with dozens of small wooden pieces? Just a few simple rules, but the games never repeat themselves and if you get a wooden set it is very satisfying in a tactile way. A really lovely game that can be played by all ages is Formula One, a motor-racing game where each player has a little dashboard with moveable dials (no longer made but regularly comes up on ebay) - a classic that is still charming. Othello - incredibly simple but incredibly addictive, nice tactile board and counters too. Hare and Tortoise (made by Gibsons Games), beautiful looking board and pieces, the faster you try to go the slower you go - good for adults and kids. I've just seen the modern version of this game and I don't like it - mine is set in a vegetable garden - the new one is a race track..all down to personal taste I guess - you can always look for older versions on ebay.

Since you say you are in the market for a new game, one would assume you already have Monopoly, Risk and Chess. Try Settlers of Catan, as some have mentioned. I've also heard good things about Coup!, but haven't gotten a chance to play yet.

I love Settlers of Catan with the Cities & Knights Expansion set. Unfortunately, it's pretty expensive. Another really fun game is Ticket to Ride which I think got a Best German game award... I have been really digging the old school back gammon too, but for the money, Settlers is totally worth it.

My favourite game is Arimaa. It can be played with chess pieces on a chess board but the rules are very different from chess and it is much more fun, you don't have to remember loads of opening moves like chess, the games are quicker and are less likely to end in a draw. You can play it online at http://www.arimaa.com . You should definitely give it a try!

Definitely Settlers of Catan! Seems complicated, but it really isn't. To agree with the other guy who suggested it, you WILL be addicted!

Also, there's another board game called Zombies that is a lot of fun!

Check around for a specialty game store and don't be afraid to talk to the staff there for other sugesstions; they know their stuff! The best games aren't the ones that you can find easily :-P

In my opinion chess is the best board game ever. Takes a lot of time and effort to master.

Settlers of Catan - it is basic strategy game to build a civilisation with roads, settlement & cities but every game you play is different because the board is made up of lots of hexagon pieces that fit together. You will be addicted!

How about chess? It is most widely played board game in the world.

Other interesting ones: Settlers of Catan and its expansions, Carcasone and its expansions.
