Haiti and the Dominican Republic are on the same island, Hispaniola. The DR was a Spanish colony, and Haiti was French.

In the DR, Hispanic people intermarried with black African slaves and white people and any native people they didn't kill off (most of the Native Americans in the Caribbean got killed off by war and disease.)

In Haiti, slaves were kept separate from their French masters--they rarely had children together. The French people there had a real disdain for their African slaves.

Therefore, racially and culturally, the two countries are very different.
