Have a friend whose gas stove oven won't come on at all. The top burners work just fine. When you turn the oven knob, you don't hear the click click, and there's no smell of gas. Any ideas?

Sounds like the glow tube has went bad. In back there is what they call a glow tube, or plug, it may have gone out, or the thermostat is bad. Look up inside of the broiler.

If it's ten years old or newer, the odds are it's the glo coil igniter in the oven. When you turn the oven thermostat knob to a preheat temp., the little ceramic coil near the oven flame tube glows cherry red. When it gets to a certain temp. it allows a certain voltage to flow thru it to the gas safety valve so that it opens and releases the gas. When the gas flows out of the small openings on the side of the flame tube and hits the glowing coil the gas ignites and you have flame. You can check to see if the igniter is functioning at all by removing the broiler or storage drawer, and looking inside towards the back of the unit, while turning on the oven control. If there's no glo, it's not working. It's not usually a repair for an amatuer, however, so you're probably going to need a appliance repair person.

Stupid question - Are you sure the oven is gas??? I have a gas stove but the oven is electric.

If it's really a gas oven, I would suspect the valve is bad.

Good luck

The make and a model number would be most helpful since there are several methods used by many manufacturers. The best you will do without that information is the limited knowledge that the responders have about systems on their own appliances that they don't fully understand themselves.
