It comes from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The pre-spirited Scrooge scorns all the Christmas frivolity and good will with the phrase, "Bah! Humbug!" A "humbug" meant fraud or deciet, so he was saying that Christmas was a fraud-- he called it a reason to pick a man's pocket each year because Bob Cratchit wanted a day off.
