My children are on Myspace a lot, and i try to discourage them from doing so. I don't want them to know i'm checking it because then they would not talk to those that they do, i want to see what they say and do so that if they were to talk to this person i'd be able to punish them from doing it, otherwise they could find another secret way to talk to online predators, i hardly know whats going on on their myspace/other accounts. Any programs i can use over my home network to check? Thank you so much.

Also keep in mind, their accounts are on private, but i'm still not sure if they could be talking to strangers.

There is various software out there for monitoring online activity including all online messages and keystrokes etc.
Click on the attached link for a list of the best ones reviewed by PCWorld. I have kids and I know exactly what you are talking about especially with the boom of MySpace.

Just so you know If i found out that my parents were invading my privacy like that i would be really mad at them; I know you have their best interests at heart but they might think you are just taking away their fun, which you kind of are. You should trust your kids to make their own decisions because us kids know more about what's best for us than you think.
But if you are determined to stop your kids from using Myspace try to give them ideas like going to the movies with friends or something.

Don, by invading your children's personal space you are acting like a not-so-good parent. It would be far simpler to bring this topic up into conversation around the dinner table. Perhaps tell them a story to illustrate the point, or take them to the police station so that they can talk to them about the dangers of paedophiles. (or was that just your excuse to invade their privacy). Children have rights too!

any account made by a user that contains private info is strictly protected and does not allow anyone except the user to log on

i would say ask for there user names and passwords but if your children are intellegent they will make a dummy account for you to look at whil the sensitive one is hidden

you have two options, trust your kids.......or ban them

HAVE THEM SET THEIR PROFILES AS PRIVATE, ITS OTHER SETTINGS THAT'S WILL ASKED THE PERSON WHO IS REQUESTING OR TRYING TO SEND THEM MESSAGES YOUR CHILD'S LAST NAME, ITS LIKE A CODE ONLY CLOSE FRIENDS AND FAMILY KNOWS. TRY THAT :)
