the obd2 code is P0102 ( mass volume low in-put) ... a sensor, the air filter? i can't get any service info without paying too much for it

First, make sure you have a clean air filter. Then go to the auto parts store and get a Chilton's Manual for your car. They are about $20 and well worth it.

The manual should tell you where the mass air flow sensor is (it should be located "north" of the air filter). There will be a plug that you can take loose to see if you are getting the proper voltage to each of the terminals in the plug. The book will tell you how, but at a minimum you will need a Volt Ohm Meter ($15 - $20) to do this. But if you're trying to save a few bucks, it could be worth your time and money.
