For example, I may be offered gold, but gold doesn't make me happy. Let's say I prefer silver although I know it's not as valuable as gold.

So in this situation, what's better: being happy and sticking to your own preferences or choosing something just because you know it's better although it makes you feel empty?

Note that the examples are supposed to be metaphors.

A much, much better example would be should you take the job that pays the most or the job that makes you happy? More people would understand it better that way as most people have faced that choice at one point or another.

With the gold v. silver metaphor there are too many outs. The obvious answer is to follow your own heart, but too many people will say why not have your cake and eat it too?

A truly rich person is one who loves doing what he does for a living and gets paid enough to do it. Notice I said enough, not the most. I would also say "and has health insurance."

Well, you can take that gold and buy the same value of silver you were offered, and have money left over to buy other things... Wont that make you happier? Or, the amount of silver could equal the value of the amount of gold offered... So take the silver if you prefer it in that form, the value is still the same. At any rate, you have more options when you have money. The way I see it, this is my only chance to experience the world, and travelling ain't free. And that would make me happy.

That depends on the priority each of us places on being either valuable or happy. Your question implies that it cannot be both
so in my case for example I cannot be happy if I'm not valuable.
The worst insult you could level at me is: You are useless.
If one is useless then it is also implied that one lives on the sufferance of others, one occupies space and consumes the earth's bounty and does not give anything in return.

Why choose something you know isn't going to make you happy?? just because your choice may not be as valuable or important as something else doesn't mean that it has less value!!!!

Choose being happy and your preferences, never what is "better" and what makes you feel empty|

For what is often "better" is nothing but someone elses idea of what better is - probably society's|
