Wow, greast question. For the longest time I was staunchly in the LS camp on this one. Their three guitar lineup was simply revolutionary. But lately I've been turning towards ABB. Certainly Duane Allman was a good as they get and DIckey Betts is maybe the most underrated great guitar players ever. Plus he really took the band over (even with Greg Allman still around) after Duane died. I mean is there a better instrumental song than Jessica? But if I had to choose, I'd go with LS.

I prefer to listen to Lynryd Skynyrd, but The Allman Brothers is the better band. Looking at this from a guitarist's perspective, Lynryd Skynryd's three guitar attack made some great music, but the amazing ending to "Free Bird" is actually several musical phrases simply repeated. The slide guitar part to "Free Bird" is technical and not easy by any means, but no slide player will ever, ever top Duane Allman. Allman's contribution to Clapton's band Derek and the Dominoes' album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" made it what it is today. The Allman Brother's Band also stuck a little closer to a blues sound; if you like blues, you've got to go with them. So as far as technicality goes, the Allman Brothers when they had Duane wins out. Another good question would be to throw in the Eagles into the comparison.

You truly do produce some hard questions.
I'll say Lynyrd Skynyrd, but only because I saw them last year. Not to mention, I can't help but laugh whenever I hear Gimme Three Steps come on the radio. (Excuse me if that's the wrong name.) Freebird makes me smile, and I can't hardly get it out of my head. Sweet Home Alabama brings out the latent redneck in me, even if we're just a neighbor.
However, the Allman Brothers Band never really comes to mind when I'm listing out southern rock, and I can never pull a song of theirs off of my head. Ramblin' Man was a good song (I had to look it up on Google, shame, shame on me!), but none of the others that I saw rang a bell.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the better band in my opinion. So much in so little time, too!

It's kind of a hard one to answer. The ABB had a few good hits like "Jessica" "Sweet Melissa" and "Ramblin' Man". But LS had a lot; "Simple Man" "Free Bird" "Tuesday's Gone" "Saturday Night Special" "Gimme Three Steps" "What's Your Name" "Sweet Home Alabama" "That Smell" "Red White and Blue" and many many others. But overall, I would have to say Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were a great band with great chemistry with each other. The produced great, and wonderful music until their fateful plane crash in 1977. RIP guys='[

The Allman Brothers Band. They don't get enough credit. Just because they didn't have a chart topper does not mean they arn't good.
