How soon do you think you'll miss out on getting to be her date? If you want to ask now, why not, couldn't hurt to tell her you just wanted to be sure to ask her before anyone else.

Depends on your relationship, but usually several weeks before.
This way she won't be asked out by other guys first and she will have time to plan accordingly.
