they don't---they're supposed to look soft and graceful, not pointing. they reach out their fingers to make them look more "floaty", i guess...

The only time in Ballet that you should point your fingers is at how well one of your class mates is dancing!
Much of what has been answered so far is correct to a degree but the main reason of the specific hand and finger positions in classical ballet is to accentuate and complete the dancers visual 'Line'. This is done purely for aesthetics but as a performance art form, aesthetics are all important.

Ballerinas point their fingers and they also hide their thumbs because, Ballet is very elegant, and poised. But having point toes, hiden thumbs and pointed fingers make the ballet much more elegant than the audience intends.

In ballet, it is very important to look thin, long, and tall and straight. in a pose called arabesque (when the leg is lifted up behind the body which is straight) the pointer finger is slightly raised and the thumbs are usually hidden in all positions.Ballet is all about being beautiful and strong!

They don't really point their fingers, but the arms are supposed to look like they are continuously moving, even when at rest. Energy is supposed to come out of the dancer's fingertips.

They don't. There's a special way to hold your hand while doing ballet. it's not pointing. it may look like it if you're doing it incorrectly tho. i should know. i have been dancing for 12 years.

you point your toe--not your hands. wide open, "give me five jazz hands" are ugly. ballet is about grace and beauty, not being wild and crazy
