It is a Republic. In a Democracy everybody is entitled to vote on every issue before it becomes law. In a Republic representatives of the people are elected to vote for them. Last time I checked the Pledge of Allegiance, Under God was still there and so was "And to the Republic for which it stands!"

democracy, people get to vote for the laws
republic, a group of selected people make the laws

democratic-republic (the USA), people elect the officals to make laws for us.

It's a Republic, with Democratically elected representatives. Instead of voting directly on every law, we vote on who gets to vote directly on every law.
