Joe was too possessive, too demanding on the free spirit of Marilyn ; she wasn't housewife material.

From what I've heard they broke up because of the different expectations that they had of marriage and Marylin's career and public image.
Joe D. was first-generation Italian of the first half of the 20th century so he wanted Marylin to become a normal housewife. She wanted to continue her acting and sex-symbol career. Her sexy image bothered Joe also, as he was a very conservative and reserved personality.
What I'm more concerned about his Marylin's marriage and divorce of Arthur Miller, the playwright and author. I'm an aspiring writer and if I break through, I want to know what to do and what not to do if I end up marrying Jessica Simpson. Hey, if you're going to go for it, why not go big?

In reality they were a bad match.
Joe was a very private man. Despite always appearing classy in public, Joe did not want to be in public very much. He was shy. He also had an ego, that demanded, in a quiet way, that he be the dominant person in everything he did. He also wanted a wife who very good in domestic affairs. He also was disciplined, and liked neatness.
Marylin on the other hand, she was 27 and Joe was 39 and retired when they married, was a public figure and had worked constantly since age 15. Marylin was a free spirit and undiciplined. She was sloppy, and very poor at housekeeping. She at times was not hygentic(Joe always was). She needed public adoration at all times. She also had the needy personality.

Because Marylin was having affairs with just about everyone in Hollywood and the White House. Joe was kind of a jerk in the first place. It was a terrible match and it was doomed from the start.

Well, He was not the most secure of personalities. And combine that with the fact Monroe was one of histories great tramps, she flirted with everyone apparently.. it led to Trust issues with Joe D. and I guess she just got sick of him always having to be around her because he thought she would bang the first powerful man that walked passed her...which he was ironically correct about LOL.
