6 of one and a half dozen of the other, when you flush it you get all the old fluid out but leave the old filter in it and the normal way you change the filter but don't get the old fluid out of the torque converter unless there is a drain on it and most cars don't have that feature.

If it is a high mileage transmission i suggest leaving the fluid in the pan draining the rest and changing the filter . I had a car once that was running fine but i had never changed the trans fluid and i did a complete fluid change and filter and then it shifted horribly . What i suggest is if you do the maintenance on a schedule you are going to keep make sure your always on time or a little over. If you have never taken care of you tranny don't start because you feel guilty let it be.

Age and mileage can be a factor in the answer here....
In actuality, both need to be done over the life of the transmission. Changing the filter in there is like changing the filter in the engine... its something that should be done to allow the filter to trap the contaminates and particles that happen during normal wear and tear. The flush will change out all the fluid, where the filter change normally only changes about 20 to 35 percent of the fluid in the transmission.
Good luck.

Your question really depends on the miles on the car. If it has never been changed and has excessive miles you dont want to start now!! a good indicator is if the fluid is dark in color and smells burnt!! Changing the fluid & filter this late will cause you more problems, slipping, real hard shifting or not shifting at all.. yrs experince in trans shop!

Do all three of the thing you listed; Flush system , replace filter and pan gasket and install new fluid. If you skip one step that becomes the weak link in the system
