Many women ask questions that they don't really want the truthful answer to. The classic example is "Does my bum look big in this?".
What they are really asking is for reassurance that their statement is indeed false (ie, they want to hear "oh honey, you look great, how could you think your bum looks big in that hot little outfit??") - but they word this as a question, so many folks get trapped into saying what they think, rather than the answer the woman wants to hear.
This causes endless problems between the genders and even between women themselves.
It is just the way women seem to be wired.
Your friends wants you to say "Oh no, you are not mean", despite the irony of her getting pissed at you when you tell the truth.

first of all she knows she is mean or at least that others see her as mean it is the same question as do these jeans make me look fat noone wants the real answer which they can see in the mirror they want someone to lie to them and make it seem ok the next time she says this to you maybe you should say tactfully you know the answer to that question I will ask you do you want to know how to stop being mean or at least being preceived as mean or you want to know why people say you are mean? the root is the problem not the question women seem to have this round about way to ask for help usually a man will ask for help (usually when it is to late to help but we ask) women spend whole years and phases of their life asking for help without ever actually asking.

Sometimes people want the truth and then cant take it. To bad for her let this be a lesson she will have to learn on her own. One day when someone smacks her in the side of the head she'll wake up. Good luck

You can tell her that I said that is a mean way to behave toward a friend. Then tell her that she doesn't have to be mean. Does she want you to give her a subtle signal of some kind when she is coming across to people as mean? Try to help her, but if it doesn't work, find another friend.

Tell her that you are not comfortable with her continuously ask that question, that youve already answered her, and obviously she doesnt like your answer so she wasting her time and yours. you can tell her what it is that makes her mean, and tell her if she doesnt like it then she needs to adjust her attitude. Dont spend time worrying about people you cant change you may not even know or talk to her in 6 months or 6 years....so why stress and worry?

Well if you like being honest then tell her. At least you don't keep secrets and she has to accept it no matter what it's just the freaking truth, right?

Typical immature girl response. Don't worry about it. You can stop being her friend if you want. Unless you like drama, why submit yourself to being around a psycho all the time?

tell her that she has to either live with what you said or you can make something up so she can realize that she does get mad for no reason.
