Really it depends on where you live. Here in the US you need to be state and federally licensed. I am not sure about the other sates but here in Cali they have really gotten super strict about who they give permits to. To many people were getting permits who knew nothing about caring for wildlife. I myself am a satellite which means that I am permitted under my Head Director. If you are interested in working with wildlife you can find a group to volunteer with. You will learn so much about protocol and regulations that way. If you are in the US you can Google or Yahoo search Your States Department of Fish and Game or Federal Department of Fish and Wildlife. People think it is easy to take care of wildlife but in reality there is a lot you need to know. There are a lot of requirements when dealing with a wild animal. i.e. If they have a fractured wing you need to know how to set it so that it will be able to fly again, what kind of fractures are savable, what diseases are common in wild animals and how to treat them, and on and on and on. I love doing what I do and even after 8 years and now being one of the Directors I am ssssssoooooo happy that I volunteer with a group that has been establish for over 30 years. I have learned so much. If I had just gotten a permit and went for it I don't think I would know a fraction of what I know now.

The best way to get started with wild animals is to volunteer at a rescue or rehab shelter if you have one near you. Getting expert help would save wear and tear on both the wildlife and you. Some rescue organizations have foster home programs for qualified people. Sources of information might be your State Conservation Dept. or The Humane Society.-----PeeTee
