Here are some basic things I did to my 1992 Chevy Camaro 305 V8 w/ TBI.
I first added Flowmaster exhaust with the dual outlet muffler.
I went in a changed my timing chain and made sure the timing was correct.
I added a Hypertech thermomaster chip / w 180 deg. thermostat
I changed the air cleaner for an open element air cleaner and a K&N air filter. (works well with the chip)
I put in a throttle body spacer - 1" with the helix bore. (better throttle response)
Also installed injector spacers.
I relocated the maf sensor to a location with colder air (also increases throttle response)
I changed out the stock cat converter for a 3" free flow
I deleted the A.I.R. system
I installed a Corvette Servo in the transmission - (gives 2nd to 3rd gear a real kick in the pants)
Some things I didn't try but was going to were :
upgrade to a LT1 Cam
upgrade to a lower gear rearend for better traction
go with aftermarket shorty headers

save your money and put in the 350, drive the wheels off that 305 for awhile until you have saved enough for that 350, you won't be sorry, the 305 is a sled motor and I wouldn't waste money putting a cam in it. You could get a edelbrock performer RPM manifold and an edelbrock 4 bbl.carb for it and it would run a lot better and you could use this carb and intake on the 350 when you get it.I would also get a K&N air filter for it.

Headers, a phenolic throttle body spacer, and a cold air intake kit are all a pretty easy start with a K&N filter and a less restrictive cat and dual cat-back system would round it out pretty well especially with a chip or some prom work shouldn't leave you dissatisfied and could be transfered to a 350 if you eventually went that route. And by the way a 400 small block isn't the same block, count frost plugs and notice bulges around bores with siamesed cylinder walls and externally balanced crank.

If you're not going to change the engine to a 350 (or bigger) engine, you can have a new cam installed (Isky), an Edelbrock low-rise meanifold with a small Demon or Edelbrock 4 Bbbl., a set of headers (Hedman are the best, in MHO), and a flamethrower ignition. This will work wonders for your image and improve acceleration and lower ET. Good luck!
If you're planning on installing a bigger engine sometime in the near future, I'd just go with the headers and carb improvements (the cam will cost you big bucks, unless you're handy and comfortable with tearing into your engine!)

You should really change to the 350..... but if you rally want to stay with the 305....
Change the heads to 1.94's new valve springs of course...... cam... 250 duration and 450 lift... max for a 305..... headers and dual exhaust with high flow catalytic converters and 40 series flowmasters.

ive got a 1984 camaro that had the same engine, i just replaced my 305 with a 350. if you want her to sound mean a magnaflow or a flowmaster exhaust kit can give ya that. get a newer after market carb like a holley or find one in a junkyard, i did. another easy and cheap way is to strip the interior. if your looking for more horses you may want to opt for a supercharger, but thats after you beef up the engine alittle bit. good luck on your camaro though, they are really fantastic cars to drive and work on.

You can do many things to upgrade your 305. Minor things like changing the air filter and muffler, to complex like having the engine bored, stroked, balanced, and adding roller race cam with alcohol injection.
First thing you need to consider, where are you going to drive it, and how much are you willing to spend in initial costs for the upgrades, and continual costs like increased fuel spending and possible tickets.
You can also use services like Summit Racing... JEGS... and many others, and ask for kits. You will need detailed info, so make sure you have everything like engine serial numbers, VIN, and what you expect from the engine and costs.
Good luck.

A 305,350,and 400 small block are the same block but with bigger parts. you could put a better cam, crank, bigger exaust, fuel enjectors to spray more fuel, or even a intake and headers. you could do alot with a 305.
