Dont know man,run a compression test, although it may be tricky on a 13b ive never attempted it,the Apex seals in the turbo rotary's dont live very long as it is,especially if they start smoking at all,or you could be losing boost somewhere.I have owned 2 rx-7s.There are so many computer controlled devices and sensors on the car its sickening, watch for check engine lights, that is an indication of probs.Try checking for leaks around the boost tubes? I dont want to insult your intelligence but have you checked the routine stuff? (ie)fuel and air filters, ignition(plugs and wires, coil packs).I dont think running 96 octane is going to help if there is a more intricate problem presenting itself blindly.Rotary's are very simple but very frustrating, try getting premium fuel of another brand.good luck!

You may have a turbo coking problem. This is the result of not giving the turbo a cool-down period before shutting off the engine. When running at highway speeds, the exahust that spins the turbo heats it up quite a bit. The turbo has oil passages to lube the bearings, If you come off the highway and into the parking lot, and the oil stops flowing suddenly, the oil in the turbo bearings is cooked by the excessive heat into a tar like substance called coke that will actually keep the turbo from turning and put backpressure on the exhaust system. If this is the case, you may have to replace the turbo. To prevent it from happening, you can install an electric auxilary oil pump for the turbo, or just let the engine idel for a minute or so before shutting it off.

It seems like your car has high miles... So the most efficient and cost saving process would be to take it in to a trusting/good performance center and have it tuned... Your spark plug/spark plug wires may also be aged... Check out the timing/timing belt it may also have aged... But with high mile cars, part after part may go out! So get it tuned and see what parts may be failing/ or are going to start to fail before they do. Dont get me wrong, the rx7 is my dream car! I would love to have it!

I would suggest that you run a new tune-up on the car. A Sunscope
would show up all your problems that need attention and give you a very good running car. The expense is worth it.

You didn't say what it was doing. Yeah the higher pertrol will work better but you could have other problems let me know what your car's symptons are and we will see what is the issue. Does it have white smoke coming from the exhaust or is anything abnormal been happening lately on the car?

And although you pay more for it, but you do get more out of it in savings and power...
