I'm really good at math and have had issues paying attention all year, but over the past month or two I've been doing sudoku puzzles instead. Now my mind is beginning to wonder places it shouldn't be. I wonder if i should get in trouble to get out of math class or listen to my mp3 player during class. I am REALLY having issues with this. I've already done what i can, too. I've told the teacher and the guidence counceler that I'm not challenged and even had my dad talk to the teacher. I don't know how long I'll last, but i know it won't be long. The wall and ceiling can only stay intersting for so long after sudoku.

btw i did ask to be put at a higher level, but the teacher didn't even consider it. I'm twelve and stuck in 7th grade 'pre-algerbra' or to me, '6th grade review and pointing out the obvious'.

also, i've had straight a's all year, and handed all my work in on time. she knows i'm bored out of my skull and has taught me a bit of algerbra, but left it alone other than that, even though she knows she could have bumped me up to aglerbra(now it's too late.)

Instead of doing sudoku, which is nice and a good way to pass the time but it IS a time passer, go to your local library and get a good algebra text book from the stacks. Start teaching yourself algebra from the start of the book to the finish (getting two text books is better and what is even better is to find several you like and buy them cheap on Amazon or Powells.com.) Then just learn as much as you can, take some algebra tests (use math tutorials on the Internet to learn algebra and take tests). Do as many problems as you can possibly handle. Then ask if you can take a test to assess your knowledge - that way you can prove that you can even skip algebra!
Give the teacher some credit. If you give her some evidence (a willingness to be tested and then when tested, pass the test well), she won't hamper you, she'll help you. Especially if you explain to her how you learned.
By the way, you have a great educational future if you are good at math.

Have you proved you deserve to be in a higher level class? Proved it by finishing ALL your work early and correctly? Proved it by acing your tests? If not your teacher has no way to know if you are daydreaming because you're bored or daydreaming because you're not understanding.
Even if finishing early doesn't get you into a higher class, it does get you done sooner and able to move on to things you like to do. Bring in a higher level book on your own and start working out the problems in your spare time.

I know how you feel. I also think that the math curriculum is WAY too easy. This makes it easy for your mind to drift. I know this sounds incredibly stupid for such a simple class, but try taking notes, and have your parents review those notes. This way you will have to pay attention to lectures and dicussion. Eventually you will naturally learn to listen and pay attention. You can teach yourself math. I am a freshman, but have taught myself some trigonometry, and calculus, because I have not been challenged. If you really want to placed in a higher level math class, find another math teacher who agrees with you, he/she may talk with your math teacher.
Good Luck :-)
