Fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster.
They're called that because they can be seen hovering around fallen fruit in the mornings. The scent of alcohol and carbon dioxide attracts them -- it means yeast is growing on the fruit, which means it's starting to decay. They lay their eggs on the fruit. The maggots take a couple of weeks to develop into flies.
At Caltech, rotten oranges would attract them. Every spring, some lucky biology student got the job of looking for mutants among the wild population.

Fruit flies are called fruit flies because they are attracted to fruit - it's a major food source for them.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if some fruit flies were gay. Homosexual behaviour has been observed in hundreds of species of animals in the wild. It seems to be an inescapable part of nature.
