yes yes it will erratic down shift is a primary symptom

Also check the electric detent switch and the vacuum modulator. The gov (driven)gear on the 350/400 trannys is plastic, and it can shear off. But I'm pretty sure a dead governor would make the tranny hang in 1st. Check the pan for crapola.

Sounds like you need to adjust your shift linkage or check for broken motor/transmission mounts.
