I have a friend, "Anthony", who is a junior in college who has a purely sexual relationship with a freshman, "Xavier." The thing is, the Xavier is WAY into the Anthony more than Anthony is into Xavier. Anthony only uses him for sex, and Xavier says he's okay with that, but I think it's apparent that he's not.

I've tried to tell Anthony that this can only end badly, but he won't listen. He says that Xavier understands what kind of relationship they have, and that he's ok....but I think Xavier is only saying that so he can have some sort of relationship with Anthony...confused yet???

Does anybody have any advice I could give Anthony? I know what's going to happen is that Xavier will eventually push for more than just sex, or he'll get insanely jealous when he sees Anthony talking to other people....how can I make Anthony see that he's hurting himself as well as Xavier?

This may be one of those situations where the involved parties need to learn on their own. You can tell Anthony that it seems as though Xavier is more into him than in a sexual way and maybe he should be aware of the signs, but he may not listen and Xavier will probably never admit to Anthony that it bothers him unless Anthony asks him straight out, and he may be still trying to desperatly force himself to think he is ok with it, knowing that his feelings are starting to come out, he may be trying to surpress them. They will probably get hurt no matter what... Or maybe Anthony will realize that he does like Xavier in a more than sexual way. Either way, it's not up to you to play interference...

Anthony sounds pretty selfish to me.

I do not think there is any "golden" thing you are going to be able to say to him to get him to change his ways.

I would approach Xavier and convince him to cut Anthony off after all Anthony is just using him.

There really is no way to show him that, he will probably learn the hard way, as does everyone else! I mean, people are going to believe what they want to believe, and be in denial about things that they really want to be different, it's just life, and we are just humans. He will probably be very hurt, so just be his friend, and be there when he needs you. Let him have some sort of security, and once something happens, and he gets jealous, he will come to you, b/c you warned him. You can only be his good friend in a situation like this, so good luck!

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see. Stay out of the situation and let the two of them learn their own lessons from it.
