There are five species of hamsters commonly kept as pets: Syrians, Campbells Russian Dwarf, Winter White Russian Dwarf, Roborovski Dwarf and Chinese. Syrian hamsters are the ones that every pet store incorrectly sells as "Teddy Bears", "Black Bears", "Panda Bears", "Honey Bears", "Calicos", "Dalmations", etc.. It has become such a long standing practice that many people think that they are all separate breeds. The pet stores do this to get more money for them. The pet stores are beginning to do this with the Campbells as well calling them "Blackberry Dwarves" or "Blueberry Dwarves".

Here is a link to the Pet Website's page with pictures of the five different species. If you surf around the site a bit, you'll also find photos of the different colors, patterns and/or coat types for the different species:

Here is another link to AAA Hamsters run by Linda Price. Linda is one of the, if not THE, top hamster breeders in the US. She's president of the California Hamster Association and one of the only hamster judges in the US. Chinese hamsters are illegal in California so she doesn't have any photos of them.

Please note that the answer below is incorrect. There ARE 5 different species of hamsters, not 2. There are NO breeds of hamsters. For confirmation of this, please visit the Pet Website link listed above. Along with the species photos and names are the scientific names confirming that they are all different species. Chinese hamsters are not a dwarf hamster but are many times incorrectly grouped with the dwarves because of their small size.

There are only 2 different types/breeds of hamsters, Syrians and Dwarfs, but there are many different colors, hair types or hairless varieties. Within the dwarf breed you have the Campbell's Russian, Chinese, Winter White, and Roborovski are the named varieties. The site below has 44 different color varieties shown of the Russian, Roborovski, and Syrians but there are more when people cross breed the different colors. We have 12 Syrians and they are 2 Black Bears, 7 Teddy Bears (1 is a grey banded, 1 solid white, 5 greyish-black), 1 short white haired red eyed , 1 dilute (grey) dalmation, and 1 panda bear, these may be know by other names depending on where you live. We have 9 Campbell's Russians dwarfs also in 6 different colors.
