I've found bits on how to sign up, maintain etc but not on what it is and what it's for and how to get started.

its an easy way to set up your own web page with a blog on it, so you can keep an online diary. Alot of people will see it there too. good place to start your blog.

A blog simply is an online post - a diary as such that you can post news and information etc... a method of communicating to many people over the net.
Blog is short for weblog. A weblog is a journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or the Web site.
