Or would a sports coat with a nice shirt be acceptable, too?

Why take a chance. What if you were qualified similiarly to someone else, and they chose to wear a less formal attire. Wouldn't you want that edge? I HATE wearing a tie, but if the job was something I wanted, I wouuld throw one of those dreaded things on.

I work in HR, if it's a "white collar" job yes....a suite and tie is good. If its a "blue collar job" a sports coat and nice shirt is fine.

No it is not necessary to wear a tie if you are smartly dressed and clean shaved it just looks as good

You should wear a black suit with a white suit and maybe a red or navy tie.That looks professional,serious and it looks nice.
