Life Goes To War: A Pictorial History of World War II
("Life" refers to Life Magazine.) This is a wonderful book and I think your father would love it.
You might also look for books that feature reproductions of the front pages of newspapers during the war.

I would suggest Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose about US airborne forces, The Longest Day by Cornelius Ryan about D-Day, A Bridge Too Far by Cornelius Ryan about Operation Market Garden, The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sager a unique story about a foreign soldier in the German Wermacht who ends up fighting terrible conditions on the Eastern Front. Yankee Samurai is a great book about Nisei soldiers that fought in the Pacific. I own all of these books and many more these are some of my personal favorites.

D Day: June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II: Books: Stephen E. Ambrose
All the Stephen Ambrose books are very good. This is one of them. Actually, Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg produced a TV series "Band of Brothers" based on many of his books. Your Dad would love this.

I recently read "The Ghost Soldiers" by Hampton Sides. It was quite good and I would recommend it highly. It's about the the Bataan death march in the Philippines and the American and British POWs in the Japanese camps and they're rescue by the the Army Rangers. Also, the books of Cornelius Ryan "The Longest Day" and "A Bridge to Far" and "The Wild Blue" by Stephen Ambrose

Dark:
If you can find them, "Intrepid" is a true story of the head spy for the English. A great read.
Also if you can find "Yamamoto". The guy in charge of the attack on Pearl Harbour. A really great read.
Not war but read stories on site below, if like others he would probably like these books as well.
