Heterozygous means that the two alleles for a trait do not match. Alleles are the different forms of a gene for a trait.

This individual has the alleles A and a for one trait. The genotype Aa is heterozygous because the alleles are different from each other.

This individual has the alleles B and B for a second trait. The genotype BB is homozygous because the alleles are the same.

More examples of heterozygous genotypes: Rr, Hh, Tt, yY, gG
More examples of homozygous genotypes: RR, HH, TT, yy, gg

Homo- means same. (homozygous = same-o-zygous)
Hetero- means different or other. (think of the t's in these words)
