I just got a new motherboard and a Celeron D processor. The motherboard has the standard power supply port as well as an additional 12v lead. Do I need to have this plugged in to use my mobo or processor?

I've heard that the 12v lead is just for Pentium 4's and above.

if it's on the motherboard then it is required 9x outta 10, usually only when a motherboard is backward compatible will it not really need the power supply. But it won't hurt to try it without the power, if it doesn't boot up then you know it needs to have more power supplied.

No, the 12V lead is specifically for the CPU, so you will definately need it to run the processor.
