Oh about twenty some years ago, IBM came out with the pc and at that time it was private technology. It wasn't until they started creating clones of this technology that the market changed. It is because of this is the major difference between Apple and PCs. Apple though it has gained more support for third party software and hardware vendors, it is still private and thus some parts aren't as readly available to the consumer and can cost more.

Depending on your use will affect if you want a Mac or PC. Macs have been very efficient when it comes to graphics rendoring, video and music. Adobe I believe originally wrote its code specifically for Macs and then it opened to PC support. If you want more software and hardware support , you'll tend to stick to Windows. Doesn't mean that you'll won't find tons of opensource or stuff for Macs but it tends to be easier to find PC support. Also lately since Intel is supplying the CPUs for Macs, universally supported software will be more available.

Lastly, don't be misguided that Macs do not have their weaknesses in the software or that viruses cannot attack it. Though it is significantly less, it isn't impossible. Windows recieves more attacks because there are more Windows users and Windows has more poorly designed components open by default to be backwards compatible. Not that they shouldn't be closed, it just the Microsoft figured not everyone has Windows XP compatible software and keeping them open, it leads to more security back doors than Macs. For this reason BSD (Unix variance, not Linux) , which the Mac Os is based off of is more stable, because less options are open by default and with a smaller userbase it is easier to correct problems and distribute them as a whole.

The main difference is the operating system. Most PC run on windows but they can handle other OS like the various distribution of linux, free BDS, and a few others. Apple have their own operating system. What makes apple computer high quality is that they control their pc. They only use certain manufactures for their monitors, keyboards, mother boards etc etc. Because of this they are able to provide an arguably more stable computer. The other operating systems have to deal with all the manufaturers of computer parts so conflicts can occurs. Apple is able to optimized their computers better for this reason.

It used to be that apple used a different microprocessor than PCs. Pc usually use either Intel based or AMD based processor. There are probably others but they are lesser knonwed. Apple used to use a motorola based or IBM power PC based processor. The architecture and instructions for these two different families of processors are different and thus behave differently as far as programing them is concerned. However, Apple switch to Intel based Processor so this difference will go away soon. It makes you wonder if apple will get out of the hardware business and concentrate on the software business. That is selling their OS.

One thing to note is not to believe the apple comercials they show on t.v. You can edit pictures and do movies the same in a pc than in an apple based computer. The thing is that apple is more geared toward that market so their software is arguably better or so they claimed. For what most people do its a non issue. A pc is not just for work. Think about it. 90% of games are for the PC not apple. 90% of the software is for windows. You can play a movie on both pc and mac. You can do photo editing on both. Surf the web on both. Listen to music on both. The difference is that there are many more options for the same type of software for the pc than the mac. If you need more options then intaled linux in a partition of your hard drive and voila, ultimate control. Ofcourse at the price of studying how to make everything play in it.

Without writing a book.. There is almost none. Mac is a pc (same parts) but has no bios, and forced to use mac os x (freebsd based linux), and overpriced. That's it. It doesn't run faster, not better with graphics or anything else. It's a pc after all (no more powerpc cpu). There is NO reason to get a mac anymore.

Just about everything. Operating systems are different. Different hardware requirements, functionality is different.
