Recently, Pelosi and other congressmen have stated that George Bush does not have the power to invade Iran. My question: Does he Constitutionally have that power? And please, can we put aside all Bush bashing?

Yes, since he is the President. Nancy is just too big for her britches. Congress would have to vote but no Congress has ever voted down a declaration of war. I hope ours would not be foolish enough to show that kind lack of unity to the world.
If he sees an imminent threat he can launch an attack without congressional authority. Before the beginning of WWII, Congress voted 209-188. Congress has often disagreed with the president in office, but never at the risk of the reputation of our great country.

Well, that's the question, isn't it? No one's actually tested it in court. Constitutionally, Bush is Commander in Chief, but only Congress can declare war. But in reality, Bush can order troops to do whatever he wants and Congress can check him with funding. So it's a good question.

But honestly, without Congress (and the nation) behind him, Bush would be less than brilliant to attack Iran.

Constitutionally, yes. But in the modern world, if he doesn't get approval from congress first, the U.S. would be condemned all over the world.

Isn't it a shame that some so elementaryas nationa security has to be politically correct?

And no, the liberal media and the Democrats will never stop Bush Bashing. It's all they stand for.

i believe he has the authority to attack anyone, but Congress can decide to ignore all his requests for $ and make laws to restrict the use of the National guard...the state can decide to refuse to participate and the Judicial branch would decide each case....the president can invade anyone, but if he wants to win, he has to have the people and other branches behind him.

The vote by Congress can be switched...it was really an opinion poll 4 years ago anyway....Congress can pass a resolution of non-support,,,,but really all it means is that the president can expect that he does not have the money to back his action....if he's crazy or a fool he will ignore their warnings of their intention

No, unless Iran was putting the U.S in danger, then he has 90 days and he has to go to congress for funding.

Edit: That was really hard without bashing Bush. My head hurts now.

The president can send troops and armements anywhere he wants, and can do so without congressional approval. He is supposed to advise key figures in the house and senate, but few modern presidents have given that step priority. When the Prez gets with the Joint Chiefs, anything is possible.

He is the commander in chief but needs moolah from congress. Iran is a threat no doubt. You know Russia just sold them arms to help protect thier nuke assets! We thought the red empire fell but it still stands and they are still working against democracy. We are facing troubling times my friends! Say your prayers.

In order for us to say a democracy we cannot have a leader with absolute power over the people and the congress represents the people.

Apparantly so.
He is the commander and chief - generals do what he says.
Generals control brigades.
Brigades are full of soldiers and tanks.

He also tells Admirals what to do.
Admirals control the majority of our nukes.

Who thinks they can stop him?
Everyone knows he will go Escibar style on their asses if he wants to.

He don't have the power to make war, but the President does,
as Commander-In-Chief, have the power to make an initial
commitment with sending troops
