Invest in quality amplified speakers.... the sound card you have is good enough for excellent quality sound effects & music.

Too many people are under the illusion that onboard sound has the same drawbacks as on board video......it doesn't . They have 5.1, 7.1, etc ... just like any other card.... optical out ...etc...

What you need is better speakers.
I use these & they are absolutely phenominal :
Buy then from a store woth a good return policy ... just to try them out. You will thank me forever.

AC97 onboard is pretty good these days. You will get a better sound from a non-integrated solution and will also get a slight boost in your computers speed as some effort is transferred to the card rather than the motherboard.

Of course if you go X-Fi it also has advantages for items that are optimized to use the hardware (usually games).

you will find that the card you got is prob already 5.1 or 7.1 most new boards come with this as standard and for games and films its fine but if you have really good speakers you might be worth upgrading to get dolby sound
