Indian society and culture is structured and concreted over a period of 10000 years. We had a caste structure. The king, the administrators, the warriors, the spiritual leaders, the farmers, the merchants, the labour. This was structured to class people according to their place in society, so that society functions easily, with all contributing to run society to its best, in their own capacities. Modern studies show that when generations follow this pattern, the genetic structure of the human being moulds accordingly to their principle vocation. No doubt knowledge, wisdom and virtue are attainable or available to each and every class of people. But can a barber/farmer/spiritual leader be made king, and be trusted to run society to its betterment. Should society create reservations for this purpose; or in the interest of society should each class be content with his lot and vocation; for society to function harmoniously for never ending generations.

From time Immemorial the curse of caste system was attributed mainly to Brahman and upper caste Hindus. Now The Government itself listing such and such caste to come under reservation and added benefits. The list is going long and long. This exercises INSTED OF MAKING CASTE LESS SOCIETY IT IS DEFINITELY MAKING A SOCIETY WITH MORE CASTE CENTRED THAN THE OLDEN DAYS SOCIETY WHERE ONLY FEW CAST WERE PRESENT. If at all a solution is to find it is only possible by creating more avenues for employment than distributing the limited employment opportunity in piece meal among all sections of society.

I appreciate that you are thinking for the betterment of the society. Unfortunately, your presumptions are wrong on three counts.
First, Indian culture did not have anything like today's caste system. What they have was a Varnashram system where depending on age and profession, the society was divided into four quadrants.

Second, the scriptures are full of descriptions of states that had no king. The eleven mahajanpadas and the Vrishni Sangh of the Yadav clan are such examples. We say Raja Ram but we don't say Raja Krishna because Krishna was the elected chief of the Yadav clan.

Third, becoming king or queen was open for all. Ravana, Raja Rammohan Roy, Queen Laxmi Bai and Peshwas were Brahman by caste. Chandragupta Morya was from a vegetable-grower family. Bali and Sugreev were tribal kings and Prahlad and Mahabali were Asur.

Caste system on basis of birth is one of the biggest weaknesses of the modern Indian society. Reservations based on caste are also equally bad. Every Indian should come forward to create an environment where everyone gets equal respect and opportunities.

Reservations only to bring people to level playing field so that all sections of society grow uniformly.

In track events,of say 400m.800m and 1600m running race ,if conducted in a circular play ground , the participant in the innermost track is placed far behind in a lag position and the participant in the outer most track is placed far ahead of other participants, before the whistle blow/gunshot ,only to bring the participants in a level playing field.
It is not considered the person in the outer most track is shown undue favour or the person in the innermost track is let down badly.

Similarly, reservations are contemplated and provided for by our founding fathers of ‘Indian Constitution’ to uplift the socially suppressed and economically oppressed SC/ST ,most backward and backward classes in India, in the past Millennium or two by the educationally and economically progressed forward communities.

Reservations doesn’t mean ‘Tom .**** and Harry from the backward communities will be allowed to take strategic positions in society, without satisfying the qualifying criteria specified by the competent authority.

In a maturing democratic set up like ours’, the rule of law , is by consensus and not by the whims and fancies of the person at the helm of affairs.

Now, with the opportunity of anyone pursuing the field of interest, the field is open to all who satisfy the eligibility criteria, irrespective of the class he belongs to .

The purpose of reservation is to uniformly distribute the positions either in education or in employment so that the representation is proportional to the respective section of population, among the qualified and eligible incumbents.
