I was shocked that none of the answers sounded like Alternative Medicine.
I thought the idea was to use something other than meds?
any way back to the Q.
try this ...
use a cotton sock
put about 2 cups of plain Rice into the sock ,tie a knot in it.
Put sock in microwave approx.2 minutes
(flip half way thru) till hot .
use as a heating pad (moist heat is Best)
can be used over and over.
also can make ice pack same way!
doctors recommend 20 minutes of each.
hope this helps!

My boyfriend has the same problem because he takes really intense Martial Arts classes. There is a Chinese remedy that comes in liquid form, called Woodlock. It is truly amazing and works almost instantly. Just rub in and you'll see immediate results.

Can be found at any Chinese pharmacy or health store.

The best thing for him - almost a permanent solution - is talking to a chiropractor, specialized in Spinal manipulation.
The treatment does not involve neck, or other bones adjustment - it works through the spine, and results are wonderful.

I personally always have a tube of Aspircream on hand. No real smell and helps kill the pain nicely.

It even works on a headache if you massage it on the back of your neck, your temples and your forehead.

I hope he feels better soon.

try Icy Hot and a good quality neck massage...simple, cheap, and it'a a DIY. also my friend, Léa would suggest running a massaging shower on it while rubbing the affected area...works miracles.
