The children of our Sunday school program put together a cookbook that is going to the publisher soon. I have a cute photo of all the kids together & we'd like to use it on the title page of the book. Do I need writen consent from the parents to use this photo?

yes, you dont want some crazy parent suing you to get some extra bucks or for whatever other reason people do such things. i had a kids parents start problems with my highschool because a kid didnt want to be in the yearbook and there was a photo with him in a crowd and they got angry and started problems, even though you wouldnt know he was in the photo unless you looked for him.

Yes, because there's a law saying that you don't have the right of using the photo of other people (especially minors) publicly without consent. There's this whole thing about how there might be endangerment too. Besides, It's not worth a law suite and other complications to get a someone's picture on the cover of a book.

I would get permission. For one thing, I had a child in my DARE classes that was on the run from an abusive parent, and the teacher said the parent had specific instructions to not put that child in any photos that might be seen outside the school.
Better safe than sorry, it's expensive to be sued and I wouldn't want that to happen to somebody who is trying to do something nice.

It'd probably be the best thing to do.
I'd just write a little note to the parents letting them know you're publishing something with their child's picture in it and if they have any objections, to notify you immediately.

It'll prevent you from being sued or something later on, should a parent decide they didn't want that photo printed or something.

You never know with people nowadays.

You should, because it could lead to problems. I have taught before, and I know I have to get permission to use pictures of my students for anything besides personal portfolio use. Some people have important reasons for not wanting their children's pictures published for many to see. I'd imagine in a church people wouldn't be so uptight about giving permission, so it should be fairly easy for you.

I would say to be on the safe side you should. Plus it is a great way to get the cookbook out there!

Yes. Their pictures are being used in a publication. Even photographer's studios have releases signed when they display photographs in the studio or in the window.

You should get written permission from the parents. If you end up having problems in the future you will be able to pull out their information and signatures to prove that they agreed to it. I hope all works out for you.
