If you are born in the northern parts, you just learn how to adjust, and don't really think about it, it is just part of growing up. We all have support systems so far as relatives and older folks that we rotate checking on them, the firemen and police and service groups from the Church's and community centers and mostly just everyone checking on their nearest neighbor.
So far as getting to and from work, you do what you can, we stock up and allow for the winter months.

the elderly can pay some kid to shovel their driveway, just like they pay kids to mow their lawn, if they dont have any family nearby to check up on them. as for paychecks we use direct deposit, for the few people that have get an actual paycheck they have to go into work. As long as it doesnt snow like 8-10 feet they do a pretty good job of cleaning roads within a day or 2, its not like california we arent a bunch is wussies that freak out when snow comes, we're use to it. Most work i ever missed due to snow was 2 days and thats when it snowed like 4 feet.

There are always nice and caring neighbors up here in snow land. Some pharmacies even deliver needed prescriptions to the elderly. Usually the police will check up on someone if you call and ask them too. And, as for paychecks... You just deal with it or hope you have extra money stashed somewhere. I usually save a month's worth of money needed for a month of bills.

In our neighborhood, which is very rural, the elderly neighbors have their driveways plowed out by another neighbor who has a truck with a plow on it. We also take turns shoveling out steps, etc. and call their phones periodically to make sure they are all right. We have two and one half feet of snow here (Central New York State)

Elderly people rely on the kindness of others. Hopefully family will take care of them or good hearted neighbors. I get paid if my work closes because of snow. Otherwise I would have to call in sick or use annual leave. Most people -don't work - don't get paid. I work for the government. :)
