How much would an electriction charge to install a system (say 1400 watts) in a house and tie it to the grid?

Installation costs vary from state to state. I would call some electricians and get a free estimate to do this work.

Here in Montana the average cost for installing a solar system on a residential home is approximately $7.50 per watt. There are also lots of grants to help offset this cost. A good resource for these grants is www.dsire.org

A 1400 watt system would not be very cost-effective. You have a pretty good hunk of change in the inverter itself. This cost spread over just a few panels makes the cost per kilowatt pretty steep. You could be happier with a system sized for 2500 watts or more. Also a system rated at 1400 watts will not deliver that much. You will be lucky to get 80% of the rated output of any system. This is because of losses in the wiring and in the efficiency of the inverter.

If you are in an area where the power company gives you net usage billing. a larger system will feed surplus power into the grid in the daytime, and you can get it back for free when the sun is not shining.

It is impossible to tell you the cost of a system without a lot more information. Learn all you can from the Internet and other sources, so you can ask perceptive questions.
