It depends on what part of the UK you're in, to a certain extent.
There are trade outlets/auto factors which are generally a lot cheaper than your Halfords type shops.
I use Maccess, http://www.maccess.co.uk/ which is a cash and carry, but it's supposed to be trade only. 15 branches nationwide.
There are similar outlets around the country. Have a google.

http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/ are pretty good for exhausts, shock absorbers and similar stuff.

Failing that, if your car is German, Swedish or French then use "German,Swedish And French Autos" (GSFAutos.co.uk). I use both of these companies regularly and save a fortune. Not to mention incredibly fast delivery times.
