Kids are too spoiled today. We used to play with the boxes too. When they wore out from sliding down a hill or made into part of a fort or for one of a million other things our imaginations could conjer up there wasn't much left to throw away. Then Santa brought a toy or two not a whole livingroom full. Tell them no.

I agree. My kids are not spoiled at all and I have to hear all the things their friends have and how unfair it is. But I did not have much growing up either and I think my kids have it a LOT better than me. I still can't justify buying them all kinds of things.. they already have Playstation and Nintendo, but now their friends have the new stuff from Christmas and I can't see updating that expensive stuff every year to keep up with the Jones'. It doesnt teach the kids to earn things for themselves.

No its not stuffy. I think that we need to be taught to be less materialistic. The more you have the more you have to take care of.
I always felt there should be more of a purpose to life than chasing after material things. Its good to be taught this younger instead of being lost, miserable and brainwashed by the media until we can figure this out for ourselves.
I always associated stuffy people with being, dry, boring, acting superior, and being obsessed with material wealth...how is freeing yourself and your kids from junk stuffy?

Kids don't have to use their imagination anymore. When I was little I spent hours playing with an empty box. It was a Car, a plane, a boat, a house, a spaceship, a tank....and it was free.
Toys today do the imagining for kids. Just give them a box and see what happens.

So do I!
It astounds me to see these little 5 year olds drivig round in minature four wheeled drive cars or little motorbikes! It also makes me wonder how the hell their parents afford it. They must be up to their eyeballs in debt!
My son is only 10 weeks old and not into toys yet but I'm really not going to be able to afford to buy him loads of stuff, neither are our family, and thats probably a good thing! I hope he'll be satisfied with what he gets, plus outings, music lessons (I can teach him myself), making stuff at home with me and so forth.

No you are not stuffy. Sadly parents use material things for their children because they do not have enough time for them in the materialistic world we live in today.
One of the best and happiest families I've ever known gave little token gifts at Christmas and celebrated Christ. They were so close warm and loving. I gave my kids everything their heart could desire but we did not have the warmth and closeness of this family. I havn't seen or heard from them for many years but their example still inspires my life.

Yes and No. There are a lot of kids who barely have health care because they live in poverty. Then you have the kids with two new cars and three-hundred dollar cell bills everymonth and wear designer clothes.......there needs to be a happy medium in terms of getting stuff. I'm a kid and I got one book for christmas from my parents, so I'm going with no on this one based on my personal experience...

When you give your children everything only shows them that instant gratification. They need to learn to earn, save and then purchase their wants. They will respect them more and actually pick it up off the floor. I did notice on TV, a new commercial regarding a cell phone, the boy asked, I think I need a cell phone, and the dad replied, I think you need a job. We need to see more of this and not worry about keeping up with the Joan's next door!

present buying is sometimes an excuse for being good parents giving then every thing they want, you know the old saying "my child will have the best" the spititual education and honesty they need and how to survive without going off the rails isent bothered with.

I agree. i have a 7 year old. It is amazing how many toys they get and how many they never play with. My duaghter has had many toys thrown in the garbage.. just because she couldn't keep her room clean because she had so many toys. The funny thing is that the less toys she has... the more she will play with them! I think the less clutter... the more room for imagaination.
