because people get shocked when the truth is told to them, no matter whether it be gentle or harsh. We as a society have become so used to not being able to 'Handle the truth'.That when we have it 'said' to 'us', compared to 'hearing', it. We simply cannot accept it! so we hide our conversations in half truths and evasions. So as not offend, upset, or whatever, even though expressions :- "slept with" really means "had sex"
we still prefer 'riddles' to the truth. Has any one ever really answered truthfully the q"How are you?" have you ever said exactly how you were? no!! because 'people are only speaking by rote, and do not really want to know.

Your reading too much in to it, just a widely used expression for making love......unless you are a little child and refer to sleeping with your friend etc. Think of other things people say like Getting Hitched, you know they aren't getting helped up anywhere but getting married. Going on Honeymoon.....well there's one to toil over or would you rather newlyweds said ' We are going away on holiday immediately after we are married" Doesn't sound so romantic does it?

Because they are quite sure you'll know what they mean. "Slept with" is just a polite way of saying "had sex with".

If you aren't clear when someone says that, feel free to ask "do you mean you went to sleep in the same bed, or that you had sex?" I'm sure they'll be happy to clear that up for ya.

Because they don't know what they mean themselves. People lie and tell who they slept with because it makes them seem bigger, and better. But in the long run it makes them seem used, and not so important.

Because we're taught to use diplomacy as we grow up and to respect other peoples feelings.

Well....some people like to make themselves seem like big...so they have loose mouths. I wouldnt have anything to do with them if they are going to kiss and tell...thats not caring about someone...thats just using someone else to make them feel better.
