The best thing to do is:
1. Keep it up to date by using Windows Updates
2. User an Anti virus program, I personally used Zone Alarm, but Norton is also a good one.
3. Go to http://www.downloads.com and download the following two programs: Spybot Search & Destroy, Adaware SE. Both are free and should be run regularly (once a week) if you use the internet alot.
4. Use the Disk Cleanup and Defragment features on the system. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
5. As for speed you could nearly always use more RAM (memory) this is computer motherboard specific as far as what type and how much you can have total.

Those are some of the basics to keep your system running smooth and fast.

You can download the following 2 programs from www.iobit.com:

Advanced Windows Care V2 Personal (or Pro)
IObit Smart Defrag

They actually make your computer faster and more immune to spyware.

Good luck!

Disk Defrag, download a good registry cleaner that removes old and spoiled registry keys, Tune-up Utilities is a good program you can try for free and the changes stay after you uninstall it so you can just use it and then uninstall.

download Windows Live OneCare from Microsoft. It will do everything for you from cleaning of spyware and viruses to cleaning and unnecessary files and even running disk defragmenter to make your system run faster.
