At the time of the June 4 Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, Yang Shangkun was President of the PRC and Commander in Chief of the military.

Zhao Ziyang, a man sympathetic to the demonstrators, was General Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee, which made him by statute the most powerful person in China. However, his power was declining.

Deng Xiaoping was Chair of the Central Military Commission, which allowed him to seize power temporarily to quell the rebellion. Zhao fled to the south and was later arrested. Deng Xiaoping later became the General Secretary of the CCP (I think this is the post that is often referred to as "Premiere" or "Party Chairman", in addition to holding power over the military through a loyal subordinate whose name I forget.)

Jiang Zemin was the leader of the Shanghai branch of the Chinese Communist Party, and aquitted himself well (in Deng's eyes) by putting down sympathetic protests in Shanghai.
