A claim this size is going to go to small claims court, and as someone above said, you can file in small claims without a lawyer. Small claims courts use simplified procedures and judges may have more leeway to reach an equitable remedy than they might in traditional courts (this depends on your local jurisdiction).

If small claims isn't going to work, you can still appear before a court pro se, that is without a lawyer, but its not a good idea. You may be able to find a lawyer who will work on a contingency, so that they will only collect a fee if you are awarded damages by the court. You can try legal services but unless you are indigent, chances are they will not have the resources to help. You can also try the legal clinic of a local law school if the clinic is focused on the type of dispute you have.

Most lawyers will work free if they think you can win a lawsuit, they will get their money when the suit is won.
