One thing to remember - lacquer never completely dries - that's why old Jaguars always have cracking and crazing in the paint. As it continues to dry over the years, it eventually becomes too small too cover the vehicle. Of course, this process takes 50 years or so, but this also means that it is softer and more easily scratched. So be careful waxing - you could scratch the paint if it's not perfectly clean.

Enamel, on the other hand, is very hard, easier to use and clean up, and doesn't take anywhere near as long to set (lacquer can take days before it's dry enough to touch.)Lacquer can look incredible - but it's difficult to put on, and difficult to look after. This is why manufacturers don't use lacquer any more.

Acrylic Enamel is not the easiest paint to use, if you are painting your complete car use Base Coat Clear Coat. Base/Clear system is used on most cars today, and offers a higher UV protection and longer lasting paint. High Solids clears such as PPG DCU series I find gives a phenom. shine to the finished product and is really durable, plus the best protection. If an in-experienced painter is using enamel paint and gets any runs, sags or dust while painting, will have a really difficult time fixing this. Base clear allows you to wet sand the clear coat and polish the clear back to showroom shine.

Most new cars use acrylic enamel. It's easier to sand/buff, and less toxic. Custom paints are usually lacquer. Better/brigher colors, but very toxic.

Acrylic enamel is the easiest paint to use, in terms of clean up and repair after it dries. Lacquer is petroleum based, much more dangerous, difficult to clean up, more difficult to repair, but looks incredible on a good body.

Lacquer and enamel are day light and dark.Never use laquer,it doesn't hold up long and it's alot of work. There are several types of enamel paint.Acrylic urethane is the best.If the car is a metalic color don't use anything but base/clear.
