Nearly perfect grades, high SAT scores, good extra curricular activities, good essay, etc.

For Stanford, how impressive your extra currics are is even more important b/c every applicant will have great scores and they're allowed to be pickier than Berkeley. Doing some community service and joining some clubs or sports teams won't cut it. You actually have to be a leader and do something that goes beyond merely participating.

For Berkeley, being in state with good stats such as GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and extracurriculars will definitely help you a lot more than being out of state.

Stanford, I would recommend A LOT of work spending into get high SAT scores and SAT II Subject test scores. A high GPA, unique extracurrics and leadership positions would also help. Recommendations should also be personal and amazing. Good luck.
